Why does the dog have hives?
Unless the dog is have problems with hives, such as itching/scratching, here is no need to contribute any medicine. The hives will turn away without pills.
Most medicine for relatives can be given to dogs (in smaller doses) as it is the same drug. I have treated animals for heart disease, diabetes, allergies, and pregnancy problems next to 'people medicine' from my vet.
Better to take the dog to the vet for the proper treatment. People drug can kill dogs.

I own given a 20 lb. dog Benedryl but only a 1/4 of a 25mg. pill. You should run to the store and get gooey baby Benedryl and purely give the dog a tiny amount. It will product him sleepy, too. Too much and he'll never wake up. Be VERY sensible.
They do make baby/children's Benedryl. Use that one and only.
