The TV scenario with a doctor yell "Somebody get me a crash pushcart!" means it isn't coming surrounded by time, and if it does, it's coming with panic staff, where "Mary, would you bring the crash pushcart, please?" gets it done right immediately.
Likewise, if you're overworked and understaffed, you can work to a degree beside the hospital administration on fixing problems, but you don't enjoy the autonomy of an office practice, and if you're routinely have to juggle 30 patients, it's past time to find another career. which isn't hard to do. It generally all comes down to how ably you can work with the supervision. In the not to distant past, the ER be the red-headed stepchild of most hospitals, but that's beginning to transmutation.
I personally similar to working 14 shifts (12 hours) a month, and having days at a time when I'm inoperative and can do something else. I'm one of the older guys, but I'd not want to work contained by an office and hold to deal beside all the business aspects that regularly go near office practice.
