Side effects=Symptoms..?

I'm on some trial medication for fibromyalgia and been looking around at other medication prescribed and I've noticed profoundly of the side effects for these drugs are actually vastly similar to the symptoms of the condition.

My boyfriend laughed when he saw that I be on amitriptyline (primarily an anti depressant, but I'm on it for pain management) and that one of the symptoms be depression.

In very simple expressions could someone please explain why a drug would be created and prescribed when the side effects are similar or the same as the symptoms?

(I get that not everyone experiences the side effects and that one drug may not help everyone)
Answers:
The amitriptyline is mostly used for its sedative properties when used within fibromyalgia. And as for prescribing drugs that have side effects similar to symptoms person treated, I'm not familiar next to that, and I study drugs for a living. I haven't heard of cramp being a side effect of amitriptyline, to be honest. On the other mitt, there seem to be to be much better meds for pain than amitriptyline, e.g. own you tried the NSAIDs. And as for what JJ4RP says, probably your diet could be changed, but to completely dismiss "chemicals" or drugs as a source of treatment seems to me to be myopic. Drugs save millions of people and will verbs to do so despite the naysayers.
because the drug and all drugs simply try to blanket the symptoms. if you really think almost it how can an artificial chemical help your body be better?
and since they don't really appreciate why fibromyalgia happens they can't truly treat it next to their method

i would really recommend you look into seeing a dietitian and a nutritionist.
potentially with them you could be capable of eventually prevent and decrease the intensity of the misery over time or hopefully eliminate it completely.
Not sure roughly the laws contained by NZ, but in the States EVERY symptom or side effect the trial subjects exhibited during clinical trials has to receive mentioned for liability reasons.

So if for example an antidepressent didn't work on one of 200 exam subjects and they reported being depressed during the clinical trials... "Take Bam for depression... side effects may include depression."

Now if the drug is clearly ineffective, it's never brought to souk, but if it works say 60% of the time, out the door it go.
I would try webmd to see what side effects you may face. Good luck :)
