It's the pulse oximeter, one of the monitors we use contained by anesthesia. It's connected ot the clip they put on your finger.

The clip shines two wavelengths of red light through your finger, and a sensor picks up how much be absorbed. That corresponds to the color of your blood. The more red it is, the more oxygen is contained by it. It displays a number that shows us the percent of oxygen saturation of your hemoglobin, so we know whether or not you're getting enough oxygen.

The tone of blare corresponds to the number. As the saturation drops, so does the tone. We can know what your sat is newly by listening. If we're busy doing something else, we are smoothly alerted to a dropping saturation. Anesthesiologists are very tuned within to that beep.

We can also hear if the heartbeat is irregular, and consequently will look at the EKG to see what's going on.

It's the most important monitor we own, after our own eyes and ears and brain.

Here is a picture of one. On this monitor, the top tracing is the EKG, and the bumps below it are the pulse ox tracing. The "98" is the saturation (98% is good) and the "88" is the heart rate.
