Do spiders sleep?

It really depends on how you mark out "sleep". All animals have some sort of 'circadian' rhythm - a day after day activity/inactivity pattern. Some are involved during the day - diurnal - others are stirring at night time - nocturnal/crepuscular. The period of inactivity are characterised by subtraction (to a shelter perhaps) and a drop in metabolic rate.

This applies to spiders as in good health, although no studies have be done to measure the time of year of time spent in such a state or at what times different species do it. It seem that spiders with apt eyesight that rely on vision to invasion prey may tend to be more active contained by daylight hours, whereas others that rely on snares/webs could be involved at other times, but this is not necessarily the case for adjectives species.

In cold climates, spiders "overwinter", which means that they own a kind of hibernation time. Overwintering involves a drop in metabolic rate, where on earth the spiders bring their legs into their body and remain huddled in a shelter during the coldest months of the year.

This propensity to shut down for a long period of time indicates that they might be capable of do it for shorter periods surrounded by their everyday cycle, which could be seen as a form of sleep or rest.
