I'm not sure, but my experience next to any medical treatment, it will likely hurt. It seem that nature go against pleasure. If it hurts, it means it's recovering.
I'm going through physiotherapy because I broke my leg 6 months ago. When I don't push the exercises, I don't feel backache the next morning, but my leg feels stiffer. If I push the exercise my leg hurts but it feel stronger and not as stiff. The pain does however travel away quicker as the exercises increase.

O course it hurts, even if it is injected with novacaine. Usually a physician will remove a neuroma (tumor of a cheek in the foot.)
