I am 40 and starting med school this year. I took a long time to bring the pre-reqs after getting a BA in English. If you really want to do it, you can do it. I would recommend some volunteering/shadowing so you hold an idea what you're getting into. Get to know some docs: they can answer question and may be able to abet you with recommendation when the time comes. You should look at colleges that have right records for getting their old pupils into med schools. Don't forget that you can attend college member time while working full time. I would recommend working on the financial situation because when you start med school you will be looking for private loans, and credit history and finances will be looked at.

Medical school itself is 4 years. During this time you will want what type of doctor you want to be and then find a "residency". Most residencies are 3-7 *additional* years after that. I believe that Ophthalmology (eye surgery) residency is 3 years (during which you do capture paid - some). Your first year of residency you are considered an "intern".
