Questions on Anatomy - Sinuses?
What are sinuses? What purpose do they serve in the skull? Why Are they so susceptible to infection?
Answers:
I learned about sinuses somewhat in dental school.
Sinuses are "little caves" in the human skull, pockets of nouns, like balloons.
Sinuses seem to be a fitting way for the human skull to fill space and keep down the overall immensity of the human head. For many reasons the human guide might need to have a certain architecture (muscle attachments, backbone pathways) and having certain parts of the skull being nouns pockets allows the skull to have the needed architecture, but stay very light. A lighter skull translates into smaller quantity energy use, and easier locomotion.
Basically its the same reason you would build something next to hollow bricks instead of solid bricks.
I'm not exactly sure about infection, but usually there isn't a lot of cleansing/ventilation within sinuses, so they can get infected.
Good luck, hope it helped.
