This is a trick question. Milligram for milligram, 2 mg of Xanax (alprazolam) is much strong than 10 mg of Valium (diazepam), because Xanax is roughly 10 times more potent than Valium. 0.5 mg of Xanax is equivalent to 5 mg of Valium. Therefore, 2 mg of Xanax is roughly the same as 20 my of Valium. That's not the whole story though, because within are pharmacokinetic properties of these drugs that make this answer more difficult than just comparing potency. Valium is highly lipophilic, and thus crosses the blood brain chain (BBB) more quickly than other benzodiazepines. However, there is a rapid re-equilibration. So, there's a speedy onset of action, but it wears bad pretty rapidly. Xanax is also rapidly metabolized, so there's a rapid beginning and rapid metabolism and elmination. One of the key differences between the two is that Valium will accumulate over time, whereas Xanax will not. This log jam takes place because Valium crosses the BBB quickly -- both ways though -- in in a hurry; out fast. However, unlike Xanax, it doesn't completely go "out." Because it's lipophilic ("likes fat"), it will accrue in your fat cells, and over time your own obese cells will start to serve as a sort of slow release Valium system (making withdrawal less of a problem than beside Xanax). Sorry for the overkill. I agree wholeheartedly that you need to talk to your doc about this, but I considered necessary to share this info because I think patients should know as much about what they're taking as their docs do.
